Overview:
The Sawfly Military Eyewear System (SMES) kit includes the following:
- Spectacle frame
- Clear & smoke lenses
- Retention strap
- Microfiber pouch
- Anti-fog cloth
- Storage case
The SMES offers a lightweight frame and ultra0this arms for ensuring a comfortable fit with hearing protection and communication headsets. The curved “free float” lenses provide an unrestricted field-of-view (FOV) while the adjustable arms and low profile design offer full compatibility with helmets, weapons sights, and NVGs. The entire system weights only 1 1/4 oz and comes in a variety of frame and lens color combinations.
Build Quality:
Lens:
The SMES lenses are a polycarbonate material made for distortion-free vision. The lenses come to the end user with a tough scratch-resistant coating on both sides of the lens, assuring the best possible vision for extended usage. With any ballistic eyewear, it is very important to meet military standards. The SMES lenses exceed these standards and also provides 100% UV A, B, C, protection. The full wrap lens design provides maximum eye coverage and excellent protection. Each lens comes with an attached rubber nose piece that I can confidently say is by far the most comfortable I have worn. It’s no slip texture seat the eye pro on the bridge of your nose and hold them there.
Frame:
The SMES frame is unlike any eye pro frame in its class. I have been fortunate enough to experience many different sets of eye protection frames and the SMES takes the cake thus far. The customization (which I will discuss more when talking about innovation) of the frame may seem minute yet the simple fact that the SMES arms are adjustable can make all the difference when it comes to comfort. The quality of both arms and main portion of the glasses are very high. Both of which are very firm yet when pressure is applied bend with ease. The contour of the frame took to the shape of my head very well. The arms come out from the main frame and immediately slant in as if to contour to the users temple. The rest of the arm (which is a very pliable yet ridged rubber) bends perfectly imitating a near custom fit. St the end of each arm is a small hole made for the elastic band which also is supplied with the SMES kit.
I was very surprised to find that the SMES arms had a four length adjustment setting, each of which click into place. This aspect again helps with overall comfort due to the seemingly custom contour of the arms. The other innovative aspect of Revision’s SMES is the extremely fast and easy lens change capability. With any piece of kit, the more moving parts the more things you need to worry about breaking. Instead of applying a quick release tab or slide, Revision’s SMES simply relies on tension when changing out lenses. By simply grasping the main frame of the product with one hand and the nose piece of the lens with another, all you need to do is pull in opposite directions to release the lens from the frame. To re-install, all that needs to be done is to slide both left and right portions of the lens into their respected slots and push up on the center to secure the lens in the frame.
Final Thoughts:
Revision’s Sawfly Military Eyewear System not only offers a great look, but also great protection. Revision’s innovative, light weight, seemingly custom design offers untouched comfort in their market. After wearing my SMES’s out to the range and running through the paces while conducting other reviews, I noticed that although I had started to sweat, my eye pro was not falling away from my face (elastic band was not attached). The combination of the contoured frame and rubber nose piece kept the glasses close to my face and ultimately protected my eyes. The seemingly endless amount of accessories that came with the SMES was a refreshing aspect, too many times have I read the words sold separately. The anti-fog cloth worked great on the hot days when applied to in inside of the lenses and even came with its own zip-lock bag for re-use. I am more than happy with my Sawfly Military Eyewear System and look forward to my next run-in with a Revision eyewear product.
