It is an overwhelmingly good time to be involved in the weapons industry. With countless classes popping up all over the country with many different well known names teaching them, it is easier than ever for shooters to stay sharp and learn new skills.
SIG SAUER Academy’s Bullets and Bandages class is very unique. Where in most classes students train to be on the offensive during the duration of a firefight, Bullets and Bandages does this but also concentrates on when the firefight is over. Many shooters neglect that fact that when the shooting stops, their lives may still be in danger. Bullets and Bandages is an excellent class for those who want to train to be proficient with their weapon and also in combat aid. It is important to remember that a combat casualty does not necessarily mean the loss of consciousnesses, it means that a person cannot operate their weapon. Getting casualties back into the fight will ultimately save more lives.
Bullets and Bandages is instructed by Kerry Davis, who also owns Dark Angel Medical. The class is a three-day (24 hour) training course, where students will learn the benefits of combat aid. Student will be taught the importance of mind and body reaction to environmental stress and maintaining a combat mind set. They will study the basic anatomy and physiology of life-sustaining systems such as hemorrhages, airways, breathing, and circulation. Hands-on training consists of proper use of individual med kits or IMKs, basic first aid and advanced wound care (including tourniquets), recognition and treatment of injuries, recovery of a casualty during an active shooting situation, and proper emergency medical dialect and lingo. The class also concentrates on offensive aspects, such as response to an active shooter situation and the proper use of cover vs. concealment.
Students will spend time on at the range with both their carbine and side arm. 200 rounds of each caliber is required for the class. Although this is not a high number, the class seems to provide shooters with their fix of sending rounds downrange!
PLEASE NOTE: This is an intermediate level class. The student needs to know and be able to demonstrate safe gun handling, weapon system familiarity, foundational marksmanship skills, and working from a holster. No prior first aid training is required.
